Initiations – Portals of Transformation
Initiations are not just ceremonies or rituals; they are thresholds. When you cross one, you are never the same again.
Think of baptism, graduation, your first paycheck, or even the first time you made a family recipe. Each one shifted your sense of identity, belonging, or responsibility. That’s what initiations do: they open us to a new level of self and connection.
Some initiations are inherited through family, culture, or institutions; like traditions, gender roles, or professional milestones. Others we create for ourselves when we step consciously into change.
There’s a difference between gateways and portals:
A gateway is an opening, an invitation to step into something new.
A portal transforms you once you walk through; it’s impossible to return to who you were before.
Graduation may be a gateway into adulthood, but your first day in your career is the portal. A wedding may be a gateway into partnership, but the first time you weather a storm together is the portal.
Institutions often use initiations to shape and control. But here’s the power: you can create your own initiations—ones aligned with your soul’s growth, ones that liberate instead of confine.
Reflection Question
What was the last initiation you experienced? How did it change you in ways you could never go back from?
Journal Prompt
Write about a time when life invited you through a portal—whether joyful or challenging. What identity did you leave behind, and what new part of yourself was born?
Mantra
“I honor the portals that have transformed me, and I welcome the ones ahead.”
